I have not had my own full kitchen for about five years.
And I was not in the mood to cook when I did have my own kitchen.
I had too many other responsibilities, so I ate out a lot.
Now, as I once again acquire pots, pans, and cooking utensils, I'm thinking about what I'm going to cook in my brand new kitchen.
But I need a cookbook.
One good cookbook, nothing fancy, for wholesome plain (American) food.
What cookbook should I buy?
What cookbook do you use?
All ideas welcome, and I will announce which cookbook I end up purchasing.
I'm actually considering one of The Barefoot Contessa cookbooks--I love her show on The Food Network.
But I'm willing to consider anything!

I can't help you,
I now only Dutch cooking books :)
Success !!
Anya, maybe I should consider a Dutch cookbook? I've been told my family originated from the Schoondyke (sp?) area of Holland, near the border of Germany? I'm clueless on this, I'm afraid!
Hey gran there are a bunch to choose from here is an internet one to get you started;

I have so many cookbooks of different kinds. You should buy something that you really love - since you like american food then buy a Complete American Cookbook with all the best loved recipes.
But if I were to get another cookbook myself, I would love to have one from Nigella Lawson:) She's amazing;)!
Thanks, Floyd! I will check it out now and bookmark it!
MommaWannabe, thanks for the tip. I have heard of Nigella Lawson.
You don't need a cookbook. Just go on the web and type "chicken fricassee recipe" and you'll get a few recipes to print. I have enjoyed Julia Child's How to Cook Everything. Even my husband finds his way around the kitchen with this one.
Out here in NZ we all start with the Edmonds Cook book, its tradition. There are all the basic recipes plus some really yummy things. Doubt if it could be purchased in USA.
hey lakeviewer, I will use online resources for recipes, but I want a book to hold in my hands, get smudges of flour on some of the pages, a few coffee spills here and there. Thanks for the comment!
Glennis, I'm enjoying hearing the international cookbook choices. You never know, maybe I can find one on eBay!
Which cookbook...that's a tough one!
I know it's not trendy, but I can usually find whatever I need in 'Joy of Cooking'.
My two most-often used cookbooks are
The Barefoot Contessa Cookbook by Ina Garten-- It's her first book from 1999 - It has great recipes, beautiful photos and easy to follow recipes.
or
The Silver Palate by Julee Rosso and Sheile Lukins. I've had this book for about 12 years and it's never failed me.
But i also like Cooking Light and Bon Appetite Magazine for ideas and recipes.
Hope it helps!
I have more than 300 cookbooks on my book shelves and I seldom use them. :P
I use either the Better Homes white and red checkerd cookbook or Foodnetwork.com
